Dream Fable

I saw myself in a wide green garden, more beautiful than I could begin to understand. In this garden was a young girl. I said to her, "How wonderful this place is!"

"Would you like to see a place even more wonderful than this?" she asked.

"Oh yes," I answered. Then taking me by the hand, she led me on until we came to a magnificent palace, like nothing that was ever seen by human eyes. The young girl knocked on the door, and someone opened it. Immediately both of us were flooded with light.

Only Allah knows the inner meaning of the maidens we saw living there. Each one carried in her hand a serving-tray filled with light. The young girl asked the maidens where they were going, and they answered her, "We are looking for someone who was drowned in the sea, and so became a martyr. She never slept at night, not one wink! We are going to rub funeral spices on her body."

"Then rub some on my friend here," the young girl said.

"Once upon a time," said the maidens, "part of this spice and the fragrance of it clung to her body -- but then she shied away."

Quickly the young girl let go of my hand, turned, and said to me:

"Your prayers are your light;
Your devotion is your strength;
Sleep is the enemy of both.
Your life is the only opportunity that life can give you.
If you ignore it, if you waste it,
You will only turn to dust."

Then the young girl disappeared.

My Greatest Need is You

My Greatest Need is You

Your hope in my heart is the rarest treasure
Your Name on my tongue is the sweetest word
My choicest hours
Are the hours I spend with You --
O Allah, I can't live in this world
Without remembering You--
How can I endure the next world
Without seeing Your face?
I am a stranger in Your country
And lonely among Your worshippers:
This is the substance of my complaint.

My Beloved

My peace, O my brothers and sisters, is my solitude,
And my Beloved is with me always,
For His love I can find no substitute,
And His love is the test for me among mortal beings,
Whenever His Beauty I may contemplate,
He is my "mihrab", towards Him is my "qiblah"
If I die of love, before completing satisfaction,
Alas, for my anxiety in the world, alas for my distress,
O Healer (of souls) the heart feeds upon its desire,
The striving after union with Thee has healed my soul,
O my Joy and my Life abidingly,
You were the source of my life and from Thee also came my ecstasy.
I have separated myself from all created beings,
My hope is for union with Thee, for that is the goal of my desire.

I am happy

I am happy because I always choose the right moment. I am happy because I am a good listener. I am happy because I keep my voice down. I am happy because I do not try to convince others. I am happy because I do not complain. I am happy because I do not do two things at the same time. I am happy because I never think of two objects at the same time. I am happy because I have realised the truth that the most important thing in my life is self-improvement. I am happy because I unreservedly accentuate the good in others. I am happy because I have considerably cut down on my desiring needs. I am happy because I follow my thought-control programme every day. I am happy because I never quit. I am happy because every day I purify my heart by offering my heart of gratitude to the Absolute Supreme. I am happy because I know that my love of purity works wonders.

Smoking ban to be enforced inside Saudi airports

A ban on smoking inside Saudi airports will be enforced from Sunday, starting with King Abdul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah.

Riyadh: A ban on smoking inside Saudi airports will be enforced from Sunday, starting with King Abdul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah.

The ban will be enforced at other airports in the kingdom gradually, where offenders will pay a 200-Saudi riyal fine (around $53).

Special rooms for smoking will be set up at airports.

Earlier this year, an advertisement campaign was launched on local TV about the harms of smoking targeting Saudi youth.

Saudi smokers spend eight billion riyals on cigarettes every year, according to local statistics.

    heart and head

Creating a joint venture between head and heart puts a power pack behind your goals. Getting your head in sync with your heart and harnessing the power of coherence gives you the energy efficiency you need to achieve changes that haven't been possible before. The head can notice what things need to change, but the heart provides the power and direction to actually bring about the changes....

We wait all these years to find someone who understands us, I thought, someone who accepts us as we are, someone with a wizard's power to melt stone to sunlight, who can bring us happiness in spite of trials, who can face our dragons in the night, who can transform us into the soul we choose to be. Just yesterday I found that magical Someone is the face we see in the mirror: It's us and our homemade masks.

    Germany!

German Muslims must obey law, not Sharia - Merkel

German Christian Democrats often cite shared Judeo-Christian values rooted in the early history of Christianity because of sensitivities about the Holocaust, when the Nazis murdered six million Jews during World War Two.

Berlin: Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday Muslims must obey the constitution and not Sharia if they want to live in Germany, which is debating the integration of its 4 million-strong Muslim population.

In the furore following a German central banker's blunt comments about Muslims failing to integrate, moderate leaders including President Christian Wulff have urged Germans to accept that "Islam also belongs in Germany".

The debate comes against a backdrop of US and British concerns over the threat of terrorist attacks by militant Islamists living in Germany, with Berlin toning down such fears.

Merkel faces corresponding discussions inside her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) about whether she is conservative enough, and the centre-right leader's latest comments seemed directed at those who think Wulff went too far in appeasing the Muslims.

Wulff, who has a largely ceremonial role, used a speech on Sunday celebrating two decades of German reunification to urge harmonious integration of immigrants who until a decade ago were considered "guest workers" who would eventually return home.

But whereas the media stressed Wulff's comments about Islam, Merkel - the daughter of a Protestant pastor brought up in East Germany, who leads a predominantly Catholic party - said Wulff had emphasised Germany's "Christian roots and its Jewish roots".

German Christian Democrats often cite shared Judeo-Christian values rooted in the early history of Christianity because of sensitivities about the Holocaust, when the Nazis murdered six million Jews during World War Two.

"Now we obviously also have Muslims in Germany. But it's important in regard to Islam that the values represented by Islam must correspond with our constitution," said Merkel.

"What applies here is the constitution, not Sharia."

Merkel said Germany needed imams "educated in Germany and who have their social roots here" and concluded: "Our culture is based on Christian and Jewish values and has been for hundreds of years, not to say thousands."

Opinion polls suggest many Germans sympathise with the views of an outspoken member of Germany's Bundesbank who, in speeches and a book, accused Muslims of sponging off welfare, refusing to integrate and achieving poor levels of education.

Thilo Sarrazin, who also offended Jews with comments about genetics, was forced to quit the central bank. Merkel has tried to accommodate both sides of the debate, saying police should not be afraid of entering immigrant neighbourhoods but also that Germans must accept mosques becoming part of their landscape.

if they still prefer to live there, they should change there religion.

    life

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our Attitudes.

Responding to the floods in Pakistan

Pakistan has been struck by the worst flooding in its recorded history. The latest estimate of the number of people affected by the flood exceeds 14 million—more than the combined total of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Critical infrastructure has been damaged over the last two weeks and clean water is in short supply. As monsoons approach, flooding is expected to worsen.

Our Crisis Response team has been working to use existing tools and build new ones to help the relief efforts. We just launched a page in Urdu and English where you can find information, resources and donation opportunities to help the victims of the floods. We’re also donating $250,000 to international and local NGOs to immediately aid in relief efforts. Although we’ve been able to provide satellite imagery for disasters in the past, cloud cover in Pakistan has prevented us from compiling useful imagery so far. We hope to share imagery as soon as possible.

We’ve already learned a lot about building useful tools from our previous efforts to help with disaster relief. Following the earthquake in Haiti, a small team of Googlers visited relief aid workers in Haiti to understand how we could further help. In observing and speaking with the relief aid workers, we learned that they needed up-to-date information about available resources (such as which field hospitals have X-ray machines or orthopedic surgeons), their location and contact information. Coordination between various health and relief facilities that spring up in a disaster zone can be challenging.

Based on what we learned in Haiti, we’ve been working to develop Resource Finder, a new tool to help disseminate updated information about which services various health facilities offer. It provides a map with editable records to help relief workers maintain up-to-date information on the services, doctors, equipment and beds available at neighboring health facilities so that they can efficiently arrange patient transfers. We normally wouldn’t release the tool so quickly, but decided to make an early release version of Resource Finder available for supporting relief efforts in Pakistan. This is the first time the tool is being launched during a disaster situation so we’ll be working closely with NGOs to understand its usefulness and will iterate accordingly.

We’ve also launched Person Finder in both Urdu and English for this disaster. This application allows individuals to check and post on the status of relatives or friends affected by a disaster. Fortunately, we’ve heard that missing persons has not been as concerning an issue as it was during the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, but we’ll leave the application up regardless.

Responding to a disaster of this scale is a daunting task, but we can all do something to help. We will try to do our part and continue working with the many incredible NGOs to develop tools that help them work more effectively.

Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (Radi Allah Unho)

Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (Radi Allah Unho)

    EARLY LIFE

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu's) real name was Abdullah, and he was given the title of "As Siddique"

or"Testifier to the Truth." His father, 'Uthman, was known as Abu Quhafah and his mother, Salma, was known as

Ummul Khair. He was two and a half years younger than Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam).

He was the first among the Sahaba to accept Islam. He accompanied Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallal laahu alaihi

wasallam) during the Hijrah to Madinatul Munawwarah. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) was a merchant. He

freed many slaves, including Sayyiduna Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) and Sayyiduna Umayyah bin Qahaf (radi Allahu anhu).

He participated in all the battles in which Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) had to fight the Kuffar.

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) loved his faith more than anything else. At the Battle of Badr, his son,

Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman (radi Allahu anhu), was fighting on the side of the Kuffar. After accepting Islam, Sayyiduna

Abdur Rahman (radi Allahu anhu) said to his father, "O Father, at Badr, you were twice under my sword, but

my love for you held my hand back." To this, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) replied, "Son, if I had you

only once under my sword, you would have been no more." He was so uncompromising in his faith.

At the time of the Battle of Tabuk, he donated all his wealth to the war effort, and when Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallal

laahu alaihi wasallam) asked him, "What have you left for your family,?" he replied, "Allah and His Rasool

    (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam)."

    AS A CALIPH

After his election as the Caliph, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) addressed the Muslims with these words:

"O People! I have been chosen by you as your leader, although I am no better than any of you. If I do any wrong, set

me right. Listen, truth is honesty and untruth is dishonesty. The weak among you are the powerful in my eyes, as long

as I do not give them their dues. The powerful among you are weak in my eyes, as long as I do not take away from

them what is due to others.

"Listen carefully, if people give up striving for the Cause of Almighty Allah, He will send down disgrace upon them. If

people become evil-doers, Almighty Allah will send down calamities upon them.

"Obey me as long as I obey Allah and His Rasul (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). If I disobey Allah and His Rasul (sallal

laahu alaihi wasallam), you are free to disobey me."

Such was the first Caliph of Islam. Indeed, the world would be a better place to live in, if we had leaders like

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu).

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) now sent Sayyiduna Usamah (radi Allahu anhu) on the expedition to Syria to

fight the Romans, even though he had to attend to all the internal problems of the Islamic State.

The news that Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) had passed away, made some new Muslims think

Islamic Article: Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (Radi Allah Unho)

    NooreMadinah Network - http://www.NooreMadinah.net

that the Islamic State would crumble and they refused to pay the Zakaah. These new Muslims could not yet get used

to their faith and its requirements until then. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) declared, "By Allah! Even if a

single thread is due from a man, he must give it. If he refuses, I will declare war against him."

    RENEGADES AND IMPOSTERS

Some others became imposters and renegades. Tulaiha, Musailimah, Maalik bin Nuwairah, Aswad Ansi and a woman

named Sajah claimed that they were prophets and caused a great deal of confusion. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu

anhu) was quick to take action against these imposters.

Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (radi Allahu anhu) was sent to deal with Tulaiha who fled to Syria and later became a

Muslim. Maalik bin Nuwarah was killed. Sayyiduna Ikramah (radi Allahu anhu) and Sayyiduna Surahbil (radi Allahu

anhu) were sent to take action against Musailimah, but they were defeated. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu)

sent Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (radi Allahu anhu) to tackle the notorious Musailamah who married Sajah. In the fight

that followed, Sayyiduna Wahshi (radi Allahu anhu) killed Musailamah. Musailamah and Aswad Ansi also claimed to be

prophets while Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) was alive. Aswad was killed by the Muslims of

    Yemen.

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu's) swift and bold steps saved the Islamic State from the serious danger of

chaos and confusion. He could now attend to other urgent problems.

    ERA OF CONQUESTS

During his Khilaafat, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) had to take action against the Iranian Empire. The

Emperor of Iran, Khusrou Parvez, was killed by his son, Shirooya, and the whole empire fell into chaos and disorder.

Hurmuz, the Persian governor of Iraq, was very hostile to the Arabs and he was also cruel to the Muslims living in that

    area.

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) sent Sayyiduna Muthamia (radi Allahu anhu) to take action against the

Iranians in Iraq. His forces were not enough and Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (radi Allahu anhu) was then sent with

reinforcements. The Muslim army captured vast areas of the Iranian Empire in several battles.

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) then turned his attention to the Romans who were causing trouble in the

North-West frontier. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) sent 4 separate armies under Sayyiduna Ubaidah bin

Jarrah, Sayyiduna Amr Ibnul As, Sayyiduna Yazid bin Abu Sufyaan and Sayyiduna Surahbil bin Hasnal (radi Allahu

anhumul ajma'in) to deal with the Roman power.

The four armies joined into one unit to face the Romans more effectively. The Romans had amassed 150 000 soldiers,

but the total Muslim army was only 24 000. Reinforcements were requested. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu)

asked Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (radi Allahu anhu) to take charge of the Iraqi front and Sayyiduna Muthanna (radi

Allahu anhu) to rush to the Syrian front to help fight the huge Roman army. The armies met in Yarmuk after

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) passed away. In this battle, the Romans were totally defeated.

    PASSES AWAY

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) fell ill at this time and passed away on the 21st of Jamadi-ul-Aakhir 13 A.H.

(22 August 634). His rule lasted 2 years and 3 months. He was 63 years old.

One of the many contributions of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) was the collection and compilation of the

    Holy Quran.

    PERSONAL LIFE

He lived a very simple, pious and upright life. He was a true servant of Almighty Allah and a meticulous follower of

Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam).

He wore ordinary clothes and his meals were very simple. He attended to house-hold work and would go out at night

and seek the poor and destitute. Humility and modesty were the keynotes of his character. He felt embarrassed when

people showered praises on him or showed him immense respect. He often fasted during the day and spent the whole

night in Salaah and meditation. He was a great orator and a master of genealogy (one who can trace a person's

family line). In personal life, he was a Saint. He used all his powers to promote the interest of Islam and the good of

    people.

Hefreed many slaves, including Sayyiduna Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) and Sayyiduna Umayyah bin Qahaf (radi Allahu anhu). He participated in all the battles in which Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) had to fight the Kuffar.Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) loved his faith more than anything else. At the Battle of Badr, his son,Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman (radi Allahu anhu), was fighting on the side of the Kuffar. After accepting Islam, SayyidunaAbdur Rahman (radi Allahu anhu) said to his father, "O Father, at Badr, you were twice under my sword, butmy love for you held my hand back." To this, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) replied, "Son, if I had youonly once under my sword, you would have been no more." He was so uncompromising in his faith. At the time of the Battle of Tabuk, he donated all his wealth to the war effort, and when Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) asked him, "What have you left for your family,?" he replied, "Allah and His Rasool(sallal laahu alaihi wasallam)."AS A CALIPHAfter his election as the Caliph, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) addressed the Muslims with these words:"O People! I have been chosen by you as your leader, although I am no better than any of you. If I do any wrong, setme right. Listen, truth is honesty and untruth is dishonesty. The weak among you are the powerful in my eyes, as longas I do not give them their dues. The powerful among you are weak in my eyes, as long as I do not take away fromthem what is due to others."Listen carefully, if people give up striving for the Cause of Almighty Allah, He will send down disgrace upon them. Ifpeople become evil-doers, Almighty Allah will send down calamities upon them."Obey me as long as I obey Allah and His Rasul (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). If I disobey Allah and His Rasul (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam), you are free to disobey me."Such was the first Caliph of Islam. Indeed, the world would be a better place to live in, if we had leaders likeSayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu).Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) now sent Sayyiduna Usamah (radi Allahu anhu) on the expedition to Syria tofight the Romans, even though he had to attend to all the internal problems of the Islamic State. The news that Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) had passed away, made some new Muslims thinkIslamic Article: Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (Radi Allah Unho)NooreMadinah Network - http://www.NooreMadinah.netthat the Islamic State would crumble and they refused to pay the Zakaah. These new Muslims could not yet get usedto their faith and its requirements until then. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) declared, "By Allah! Even if asingle thread is due from a man, he must give it. If he refuses, I will declare war against him."RENEGADES AND IMPOSTERSSome others became imposters and renegades. Tulaiha, Musailimah, Maalik bin Nuwairah, Aswad Ansi and a womannamed Sajah claimed that they were prophets and caused a great deal of confusion. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahuanhu) was quick to take action against these imposters.Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (radi Allahu anhu) was sent to deal with Tulaiha who fled to Syria and later became aMuslim. Maalik bin Nuwarah was killed. Sayyiduna Ikramah (radi Allahu anhu) and Sayyiduna Surahbil (radi Allahuanhu) were sent to take action against Musailimah, but they were defeated. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu)sent Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (radi Allahu anhu) to tackle the notorious Musailamah who married Sajah. In the fightthat followed, Sayyiduna Wahshi (radi Allahu anhu) killed Musailamah. Musailamah and Aswad Ansi also claimed to beprophets while Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) was alive. Aswad was killed by the Muslims ofYemen.Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu's) swift and bold steps saved the Islamic State from the serious danger ofchaos and confusion. He could now attend to other urgent problems.ERA OF CONQUESTSDuring his Khilaafat, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) had to take action against the Iranian Empire. TheEmperor of Iran, Khusrou Parvez, was killed by his son, Shirooya, and the whole empire fell into chaos and disorder.Hurmuz, the Persian governor of Iraq, was very hostile to the Arabs and he was also cruel to the Muslims living in thatarea.Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) sent Sayyiduna Muthamia (radi Allahu anhu) to take action against theIranians in Iraq. His forces were not enough and Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (radi Allahu anhu) was then sent withreinforcements. The Muslim army captured vast areas of the Iranian Empire in several battles.Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) then turned his attention to the Romans who were causing trouble in theNorth-West frontier. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) sent 4 separate armies under Sayyiduna Ubaidah binJarrah, Sayyiduna Amr Ibnul As, Sayyiduna Yazid bin Abu Sufyaan and Sayyiduna Surahbil bin Hasnal (radi Allahuanhumul ajma'in) to deal with the Roman power. The four armies joined into one unit to face the Romans more effectively. The Romans had amassed 150 000 soldiers, but the total Muslim army was only 24 000. Reinforcements were requested. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu)asked Sayyiduna Khalid bin Walid (radi Allahu anhu) to take charge of the Iraqi front and Sayyiduna Muthanna (radiAllahu anhu) to rush to the Syrian front to help fight the huge Roman army. The armies met in Yarmuk afterSayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) passed away. In this battle, the Romans were totally defeated. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) fell ill at this time and passed away on the 21st of Jamadi-ul-Aakhir 13 A.H.(22 August 634). His rule lasted 2 years and 3 months. He was 63 years old.One of the many contributions of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) was the collection and compilation of theHoly Quran.PERSONAL LIFEHe lived a very simple, pious and upright life. He was a true servant of Almighty Allah and a meticulous follower ofSayyiduna Rasulullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). He wore ordinary clothes and his meals were very simple. He attended to house-hold work and would go out at nightand seek the poor and destitute. Humility and modesty were the keynotes of his character. He felt embarrassed whenpeople showered praises on him or showed him immense respect. He often fasted during the day and spent the wholenight in Salaah and meditation. He was a great orator and a master of genealogy (one who can trace a person'sfamily line). In personal life, he was a Saint. He used all his powers to promote the interest of Islam and the good ofpeople.

    The chemical factory

    'Mild' brands

Since September 2003 terms such as 'low-tar', 'light' and 'ultra light' have been banned.

This is because the difference between these brands and regular cigarettes is dependent on the filter alone, which uses microscopic air holes: the 'lighter' the cigarette, the more holes it has for drawing in air that thins and cools the smoke.

However, the thinned smoke contains less nicotine. Smokers can, unwittingly or otherwise, solve the 'problem' of reduced nicotine either by dragging harder on the cigarette or by grasping the filter and blocking the holes.

Research has shown that, contrary to the numbers on the packet, smokers of 'mild' brands are likely to inhale as much tar and nicotine as smokers of regular cigarettes. And because the same blend of tobacco is used, you can take in as many cancer-causing substances.

    Salmonella and food poisoning

    What is salmonella?

Salmonella is a type of bacteria. It is usually found in poultry, eggs, unprocessed milk and in meat and water. It may also be carried by pets like turtles and birds.

What kind of infection does salmonella cause?

The salmonella bacteria attacks the stomach and intestines. In more serious cases, the bacteria may enter the lymph tracts, which carry water and protein to the blood, and the blood itself. The bacteria attack all age groups and both sexes. Children, the elderly and people who are already ill are much more likely to get a serious infection.

What are the symptoms of salmonella poisoning?

In the case of less serious infections there are fewer symptoms - usually only diarrhoea two or three times a day for a couple of days. Most mild types of salmonella infection clear up in four to seven days without requiring any treatment other than rest and plenty of liquid.

A more severe infection may cause excessive diarrhoea, stomach cramps and general health problems. In such cases, treatment with antibiotics may be necessary and a doctor should be consulted.

When is it necessary to contact a doctor?

    • If diarrhoea continues for more than 24 hours.

    • If the diarrhoea is frequent and intense.

    • If the patient has severe stomach cramps.

    • If there is blood in the faeces.

    • If the patient has fever of 38oC or higher.

    • If there are signs of jaundice - a yellowish discolouration of the skin or eyes. This may indicate problems with the liver or the bile ducts that take the bile from the liver to the stomach.

    • Dehydration.

What is the danger of dehydration?

Frequent diarrhoea and vomiting may drain the body of fluids, salts and minerals. Dehydration occurs when the patient loses more liquid than they can take in. Cases of dehydration should always be checked by a doctor and can be very dangerous in babies and the elderly.

    Signs of dehydration are:

    • the tongue or the mucous membranes in the mouth are dry

    • dry, chapped skin

    • increased thirst

    • dark urine

    • lack of, or decreased, urine output

    • weakness.

How can salmonella infections be prevented?

    • Pay attention to cleanliness.

    • Make sure that all food is thoroughly cooked.

What are the basic rules for preparing food hygienically?

    • Always wash your hands with soap after going to the toilet and before preparing food. Dry them on a dry towel.

    • Wash your hands when you switch from preparing one type of food to another, eg vegetables to meat. This helps prevent the exchange of bacteria between different ingredients.

    • Kitchen utensils must be properly washed with soap and water before use with another type of food. Again, this stops bacteria being exchanged.

    • Use different cutting boards and knives for preparing different foods.

    • Change the dishcloth every day. Wash dishcloths in water that is at least 60oC.

    • Store food in the refrigerator. Meat, poultry and fish must not be left out of the fridge for long periods.

How should food be cooked to avoid salmonella poisoning?

The only effective way to kill salmonella bacteria is with heat. For this reason it is essential to cook food thoroughly.

    • Poultry must always be thoroughly cooked or boiled.

    • Minced meat must always be thoroughly cooked or boiled.

    • Never crack a raw egg on a bowl containing other foods - use a knife to crack the shell.

    • In most eggs, the salmonella bacteria exist only on the shell. Eggs should be scalded in boiling water for five seconds before use.

    Sore throat

Reviewed by Dr John Pillinger, GP

    What is a sore throat?

A sore throat (also known as pharyngitis or tonsillitis) is a symptom of a disease affecting the pharynx or the area around the tonsils. It can be the result of an infection by a virus or bacteria. A sore throat may be symptomatic of the condition itself or one of a number of symptoms realting to a wider illness such as flu and glandular fever.

The disease is most commonly seen in children and young people but it can occur at any age. The characteristics of the symptom are throat pain and trouble swallowing. If the sore throat is due to bacterial infection it can be treated with antibiotics. Usually there are no complications.

How do you contract a sore throat?

By being infected by a virus or bacteria.

Infection by a virus causing a sore throat may come from a variety of sources, including the common cold virus, influenza and the Epstein-Barr virus – the cause of glandular fever. Viral infection originates from airborne droplets from coughing and sneezing and from not washing hands that can carry the infection from person to person.

Among the bacteria that cause sore throats, the streptococcus group A is the most common. The incubation period between picking up the infection until the disease breaks out, is up to four days.

    Good advice

    • If signs of a sore throat persist for more than a few days or are severe with marked difficulty in swallowing, high fever, a rash or vomiting, then your GP should be consulted.

    • Warm drinks and soft food may ease swallowing problems.

    • Drink plenty of fluids.

What are the signs of a sore throat?

    • Pain in the throat and difficulty in swallowing.

    • Pain may spread to the ears.

    • The throat is reddish, the tonsils are swollen and may be coated.

    • Possibly a high temperature.

    • Swollen lymph nodes under your jaw and in your neck may occur.

    • If the sore throat is due to a viral infection the symptoms are usually milder. Usually they are connected to the common cold.

    • If the sore throat is due to the Coxsackie virus, small blisters may develop on the tonsils and in the soft palate. The blisters erupt in a few days and are followed by a scab which may be very painful.

    • If the sore throat is due to a streptococcal infection, the tonsils often swell and become coated and the throat is sore. The patient runs a temperature, has foul-smelling breath and may feel quite ill.

How does the doctor make a diagnosis?

The doctor usually makes the diagnosis from the symptoms of the disease, but occasionally a swab of the secretions of the throat and possibly a blood sample are required to identify the cause.

    What complications may arise?

Usually a sore throat causes no trouble and only lasts about a week, but the following complications may arise:

    • a secondary infection may occur in the middle earsinuses or chest.

    • if the sore throat is due to a streptococcus infection, there may be a rash (scarlet fever).

    • an uncommon complication is a throat abscess that usually occurs only on one side.

    • in very rare cases, diseases like rheumatic fever or a particular kidney disease (glomerulonephritis) may occur.

How is a sore throat treated and which medication may help?

In the vast majority of cases, a sore throat caused by a virus infection need only be treated with paracetamol (eg CalpolPanadol) or ibuprofen, (egNurofen for children) to bring the temperature down.

In a small minority of patients, a sore throat caused by bacteria is treated withpenicillin, or erythromycin (eg Erythroped) in cases of penicillin allergy.

The symptoms of a sore throat can be relieved by using over-the-counter medicines, such as sprays containing antiseptics and anaesthetics to numb the sore area, or antiseptic gargles. These can be bought without a prescription and your doctor or pharmacist will be able to advise you about them.

    You my sweet love

    I miss ever so much.
    The softness of your lips,
    And your warm loving touch.

    Many uncontrollable circumstances,
Have kept us so far apart.
Yet every moment I carry you,

    Deep within my heart.

    Whenever were together,
    My spirit is such aglow.
    You always color my world,
    Like a beautiful rainbow.

You are the love of my life,
    That you'll always be.
    The special times we share,
    Just mean everything to me.

    Each time we kiss,
    There is nothing so sublime.
    Always deliciously fresh,
    Like the very first time.

Holding you close in my arms,
    Flames my passion and desire.
    My soul ever so burns,
Like I am ravaged in fire.

    Each day I find happiness,
    So much joy and laughter.
Knowing that soon we'll be together,

    I Think Of You

When the breeze kisses the flowers,
When the earth gets the first showers,
When the birds chirp melodious songs,
When I feel lonely among the throngs,
I think of you hours after hours.

When the glistening stars whisper at night,
When the silvery moon throws upon us light,
When the emerald leaves murmur in serenity,
When the clouds float in the sky of divinity,
I think of you with passions bright.

When, in the sky, the rainbows arch in pride,
When, over the hills, the fountains glide,
When the confident roses spread their scent,
    When the twilight becomes crescent,
I think of you craving to be your bride.

    The Twenty-Second Greater Sin: Khayanat

The twenty-second greater sin, is defalcation or misappropriation of property. Misappropriation of property as a greater sin is stated in the Qur’an and the authentic tradition related by Abdul Azīm from Imam Muhammad Taqi (a.s.) and also from the traditions of Imam Sadiq (a.s.), Imam Kadhim (a.s.) and Imam Riďa (a.s.).
if any one do wrong with u, or took money from you doesnt mean to do wrong with me or with someon else who have helped or not.

Breach of trust denounced in the traditions
    The Holy Prophet (S) says:
“One who embezzles a property in his charge and does not deliver it to its owner and dies in such a condition, then he does not die in my community (he does not die a Muslim). When such a person meets Allah, He shall be infuriated with him. And one who purchases an embezzled property knowing that it is embezzled is just like the (actual) embezzler.” (Wasa’il ul-Shia)

    The Holy Prophet (S) says:
“One who cheats a Muslim is not from us, and one who embezzles the believers is (also) not from us.”
“There are Three qualities that are the sign of a hypocrite even if he prays and fasts and calls himself a Muslim: lying, violating promises and defalcation.”

    Amir ul-Mu’minīn ‘Ali (a.s.) says;
“There are four things and even if one of them enters a house it causes economic catastrophe and it never remains blessed: defalcation, thievery, wine and adultery. (Wasa’il ul-Shia)

Everyone's buzzing about the new launch from Google dubbed "Google Buzz." While millions of people are checking out the great new features it brings and new worlds of communication it has literally just opened up, all of us in the search engine optimization profession are asking, "How Will it Affect Local SEO?" Let me first point out a few all but obvious strategic advantages Google Buzz has over its competition.

How to Optimize PDF Documents for SEO

Marketing Tips: The Internet Marketing Secret That Stops Small Business Owners in Their Tracks

All of my clients are exceptional at the service they provide for their clients. However, many of them have a hard time filling their practices and finding clients. Almost without fail, they tell me that this is a marketing problem. It is a marketing problem, but not the type they think it is. The same problem is the Internet marketing secret that stops small service business owners in their tracks, every time.

6 Places that Flash Does Not Belong

It's recently occurred to me that I've been doing Flash sites now for 10 years and have seen it come a long way since Flash 4, where I first cut my teeth on Actionscript, tweening, and pixel fonts. Over the years, I've seen and done many projects, some of which utilized Flash in very useful ways, while others had no business using it. Sometimes, a Flash implementation hurt the company, detracted from the site's purpose, and had poor results (all the while costing them more to build the site in the frst place). So in a world where too many companies want Flash websites and too few designers use Flash very well, here is a brief list of places that Flash currently does not belong (with very few exceptions):

    1. Website Intros
Let's get the obvious out of the way. Websites exist for their visitors, not the other way around. I see almost no use ever for a Flash intro (or really, any website intro), unless your website strategy includes annoying visitors and wasting other people's time. This isn't to say that you shouldn't have a decent preloader or a smooth transition into your site, but anything more than a second or two of Flash before the actual site is a bad idea.

    2. Sites with SEO Objectives
Although it's possible to get semi-decent SEO rankings in certain situations for a Flash site, you're just not going to achieve the kind of SEO success for a Flash site that you can for an HTML equivalent. Granted, SEO isn't an easy game to play even if you don't use Flash (see our SEO tutorial), but if your website strategy has any SEO expectations, stay away from it.

    3. Menus/Navigation on an HTML Site
Menus have a singular and key function on every website -- to get visitors quickly to the content they want. The words "pretty," "cool," or "smooth" should never be in the same league as "accessible" when it comes to navigation. A Flash menu runs the risk of leaving many users stranded (not everyone has Flash, including an increasing user base that surfs with mobile devices). Furthermore, search engines won't get around too well on a website that lacks true links for its menus. And if you really can't live without the "cool" menus, there are more than enough DHTML/Javascript based menus that can transform simple list tags into great looking navigation systems.

    4. Informational/Content Sites
A couple years ago, I did a website for a large church organization that had dozens of menu items and many pages of content per menu item. They insisted on a Flash site where you never had to use the browser scroll, and at the same time, it should look just like an HTML site (which of course, begs the question, "Why are we using Flash?"). Needless to say, they ended up with a very cumbersome website that costs much more than an HTML site, both to build and maintain. Furthermore, visitors complained about the site usability, preferring even a simple text-only site where they could actually get the information they wanted. In general, you'd be surprised how often a visitor will take information accessibility over a great-looking Flash one. If your website's primary purpose is delivering informational content, avoid Flash.

    5. E-Commerce
Anyone who has followed the development of the Flash platform will concede that it has come a long way in terms of functionality and programmatic flexibility. With the advent of Flex, Flash is more equipped for application-type usage than ever before. There are even some really great-looking examples of stores built on Flex. However, I think Flash for e-commerce should still be avoided for two primary reasons:

    a) Flash stores can still be pretty complex. Your typical HTML e-commerce site is straight-forward with a catalogue, account, and checkout system, all of which can be edited and modified independently with relative ease. Although a Flash store will have the same basic components, you're still dealing with a platform with more integrative complexity and less room for error. In the last few months, I've come across two websites that have attempted to implement a Flash e-commerce solution. On both, I managed to somehow find a weird functionality bug, and having lost confidence in the site, went elsewhere for my purchase. So unless you have a great Flash developer and a solid understanding of consumer UI, stick to non-Flash e-commerce for now.

    b) E-commerce conventions are very powerful. For the last decade, online shoppers have become accustomed to how e-commerce sites work. Any great derivation from what they're used to will often result in lower ROI. Although some Flash carts look really snazzy and have more functionality than their HTML counterparts, the proof is always in the customer conversion rate. And having worked on and seen sites that have attempted both types of carts, even "ugly" HTML e-commerce sites will often outperform Flash carts. Online consumers are used to clicking on items, not dragging items to a "cart section." They want to click "Add to Cart" and "Checkout" and go from page to page. Sure, this may change in the coming years, and yes, innovation is a good thing, but e-commerce conventions still hold too strong a sway to go with Flash e-commerce just yet.

    6. Sites Requiring Heavy Management
Although Flash has a few solid options for content management, if you or your client will be constantly editing a website, Flash can easily become more of a hurdle in keeping it updated. This is mainly because clients always end up wanting to edit more than you tell them is possible. And there are few things worse in a freelancing business than maintaining parts a Flash site for years. If you know a client has high maintenance needs, make sure you address such future issues before even starting the site.

Of course, there are some websites where Flash can be a good choice or at least a "possible" choice. Some such sites include portfolios, promotional sites (movies, product "exploration" sites, etc.), sites with videos or games, and small boutique sites for creative agencies or possibly high-end design products (and even then, it's never a bad idea to have either an intermediary HTML portion or a full-fledged HTML version). Just don't ever forget that every website has a primary purpose, and if Flash doesn't contribute to that, it's probably a detriment and a liability.

HOW TO: Integrate Facebook, Twitter, and Buzz into Your Gmail

With over 10 million posts and comments in two days, Google Buzz has stormed the web like a swarm of locusts. An array of strong features, integration with Gmail, and lots of press have turned Buzz into an overnight phenomenon.

If you’re like a lot of us, you’ve suddenly found yourself using your Gmail (Gmail) even more than you already were. Spending so much time in Gmail and Buzz though inevitably takes away from your Facebook (Facebook) and Twitter (Twitter), and who wants to sacrifice their tweeting and facebooking?

Luckily if you’re a Gmail user, you don’t have to sacrifice either, even while you’re browsing your email or your buzz.

    Gadget Integration Is Your Friend

Yesterday we caught a Buzz post by Ari Milner where he described how he turned his Gmail into his personal “social command center.” How did he do it? In his words:
“The key was using Gmail Labs feature at the bottom of the list called ‘Add (add) any gadget by URL’. This allowed me to add these 3 features to my Gmail sidebar.”

By utilizing third-party gadgets, he transformed his Gmail into a place where he could access his Twitter, Buzz, and Facebook straight from his Gmail. Here’s how:

Step By Step: Integrating Your Social Media into Buzz

    1. Activate “Add any gadget by URL” in Gmail Labs — you’ll find it near the bottom of the list.

    2. Now go to Settings –> Gadgets. Here you’ll find a place to add Gadget URLs.

    3. Add the TwitterGadget App. Any iGoogle gadget will do actually, but the best one in our opinion is TwitterGadget, a fully-functional Twitter service for iGoogle and Gmail. This lets tweet from the sidebar or open up your Twitter with all of your tabs intact. It even supports multiple accounts.
To add it, copy and paste this URL into Gmail’s Gadget settings: “https://twittergadget.appspot.com/gadget-gmail.xml”

    4. Add the Facebook Gadget. In the same way you added TwitterGadget, you can add Facebook to your Gmail. While Google has an official Facebook gadget, it doesn’t play nicely with Gmail, so we suggest using the app Ari Milner users: Facebook Gadget by iBruno. It will expand into the rest of your Gmail for easy Facebook management.

To add it, copy and paste this URL into Gmail’s Gadget settings: “http://hosting.gmodules.com/ig/gadgets/file/104971404861070329537/facebook.xml”

    5. That’s it! Google Buzz (Google Buzz), Facebook, Twitter, and Gmail are now all wrapped up into one. Pretty nifty, no?

World's tallest tower closed a month after opening

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – The world's tallest skyscraper has unexpectedly closed to the public a month after its lavish opening, disappointing tourists headed for the observation deck and casting doubt over plans to welcome its first permanent occupants in the coming weeks.

Electrical problems are at least partly to blame for the closure of the Burj Khalifa's viewing platform — the only part of the half-mile high tower open yet. But a lack of information from the spire's owner left it unclear whether the rest of the largely empty building — including dozens of elevators meant to whisk visitors to the tower's more than 160 floors — was affected by the shutdown.

The indefinite closure, which began Sunday, comes as Dubai struggles to revive its international image as a cutting-edge Arab metropolis amid nagging questions about its financial health.

The Persian Gulf city-state had hoped the 2,717-foot (828-meter) Burj Khalifa would be a major tourist draw. Dubai has promoted itself by wowing visitors with over-the-top attractions such as the Burj, which juts like a silvery needle out of the desert and can be seen from miles around.

In recent weeks, thousands of tourists have lined up for the chance to buy tickets for viewing times often days in advance that cost more than $27 apiece. Now many of those would-be visitors, such as Wayne Boyes, a tourist from near Manchester, England, must get back in line for refunds.

"It's just very disappointing," said Boyes, 40, who showed up at the Burj's entrance Monday with a ticket for an afternoon time slot only to be told the viewing platform was closed. "The tower was one of my main reasons for coming here," he said.

The precise cause of the $1.5 billion Dubai skyscraper's temporary shutdown remained unclear.

In a brief statement responding to questions, building owner Emaar Properties blamed the closure on "unexpected high traffic," but then suggested that electrical problems were also at fault.

"Technical issues with the power supply are being worked on by the main and subcontractors and the public will be informed upon completion," the company said, adding that it is "committed to the highest quality standards at Burj Khalifa."

Despite repeated requests, a spokeswoman for Emaar was unable to provide further details or rule out the possibility of foul play. Greg Sang, Emaar's director of projects and the man charged with coordinating the tower's construction, could not be reached. Construction workers at the base of the tower said they were unaware of any problems.

Power was reaching some parts of the building. Strobe lights warning aircraft flashed and a handful of floors were illuminated after nightfall.

Emaar did not say when the observation deck would reopen. Ticket sales agents were accepting bookings starting on Valentine's Day this Sunday, though one reached by The Associated Press could not confirm the building would reopen then.

Tourists affected by the closure are being offered the chance to rebook or receive refunds.

The shutdown comes at a sensitive time for Dubai. The city-state is facing a slump in tourism — which accounts for nearly a fifth of the local economy — while fending off negative publicity caused by more than $80 billion in debt it is struggling to repay.

Ervin Hladnik-Milharcic, 55, a Slovenian writer planning to visit the city for the first time this month, said he hoped the Burj would reopen soon.

"It was the one thing I really wanted to see," he said. "The tower was projected as a metaphor for Dubai. So the metaphor should work. There are no excuses."

Dubai opened the skyscraper on Jan. 4 in a blaze of fireworks televised around the world. The building had been known as the Burj Dubai during more than half a decade of construction, but the name was suddenly changed on opening night to honor the ruler of neighboring Abu Dhabi.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are two of seven small sheikdoms that comprise the United Arab Emirates. Abu Dhabi hosts the federation's capital and holds most of the country's vast oil reserves. It has provided Dubai with $20 billion in emergency cash to help cover its debts.

Questions were raised about the building's readiness in the months leading up to the January opening.

The opening date had originally been expected in September, but was then pushed back until sometime before the end of 2009. The eventual opening date just after New Year's was meant to coincide with the anniversary of the Dubai ruler's ascent to power.

There were signs even that target was ambitious. The final metal and glass panels cladding the building's exterior were installed only in late September. Early visitors to the observation deck had to peer through floor-to-ceiling windows caked with dust — a sign that cleaning crews had not yet had a chance to scrub them clean.

Work is still ongoing on many of the building's other floors, including those that will house the first hotel designed by Giorgio Armani that is due to open in March. The building's base remains largely a construction zone, with entrance restricted to the viewing platform lobby in an adjacent shopping mall.

The first of some 12,000 residential tenants and office workers are supposed to move in to the building this month.

The Burj Khalifa boasts more than 160 stories. The exact number is not known.

The observation deck, which is mostly enclosed but includes an outdoor terrace bordered by guard rails, is located about two-thirds of the way up on the 124th floor. Adult tickets bought in advance cost 100 dirhams, or about $27. Visitors wanting to enter immediately can jump to the front of the line by paying 400 dirhams — about $110 apiece.

Total Success is Determined by Your Thoughts, Beliefs and Actions

Many people say they want success, yet they are not willing to do what it takes to achieve their desired outcome. I am a believer in Total Success. Total Success requires more then a successful business and a great income. Total Success is about having a balanced life, giving back and enjoying what you do.

In order to achieve Total Success there are specific thoughts and beliefs you must have. There are also certain actions you must take.

Success in anything goes beyond the obvious. Although you need a certain amount of skill and knowledge, your successes will come from the way you think, feel and act, coupled with intense emotion and a steadfast belief in “self.”

To achieve Total Success you must set goals. Setting goals cannot be a hit and miss process. It has to be systematic, deliberate and the cornerstone of every other aspect of what you do in order to create a successful, abundant, happy, and balanced life. Goals are about gaining direction, clarity and vision.

Even though the concept of goal setting took a while for me to grasp, once I did, the difference in my ability to achieve the outcomes I desired was amazing. Initially I dabbled in the process. Over time, as with virtually every other component of my success, it became very systemized.

My success is directly proportionate to my willingness to set goals, write down my goals, review my goals and stay committed to my goals.

If you want what you say you do, you have to set goals. It’s not that difficult and the results will amaze you. Get a blank book. On each page write down your goals in a specific category and date it.

Not only should you write your goals down, you must review them morning and night. Write your primary goals on a 3 x 5 card to make the review time more targeted. Doing this will keep you on target with what you want.

When you focus on your goals by writing them down and reviewing them on a regular basis amazing events will begin to happen. You will be able to manifest what you want a lot quicker.

However, you must do more than write them down and read them. You have to be committed to the outcome. This means that if you want to get and stay healthy, you will have to make choices around what you eat and how often you exercise.

It is the same with your finances. If you want to increase your wealth you must make specific choices on how you spend and invest your money.

Think of every area of your life you want improvement in. Decide what you want and what you are willing to do to get it. Write your goals down, read them morning and night and take the appropriate actions to achieve your desired outcome.

With dedication and commitment you will be well on your way to Total Success.

Color Theory For Designers, Part 2: Understanding Concepts And Terminology

If you’re going to use color effectively in your designs, you’ll need to know some color concepts and color theory terminology. A thorough working knowledge of concepts like chroma, value and saturation is key to creating your own awesome color schemes. In Part 1: The Meaning of Color of our color theory series, we covered the meanings of different colors. Here, we’ll go over the basics of what affects a given color, such as adding gray, white or black to the pure hue, and its effect on a design, with examples of course.

[Offtopic: by the way, did you know that Smashing Magazine has one of the most influential and popular Twitter accounts? Join our discussions and get updates about useful tools and resources — follow us on Twitter.]

    Hue

Hue is the most basic of color terms and basically denotes an object’s color. When we say “blue,” “green” or “red,” we’re talking about hue. The hues you use in your designs convey important messages to your website’s visitors. Read part 1 of this article for the meanings conveyed by various hues.

    Examples

Happytwitmas in Color Theory For Designers, Part 2: Understanding Concepts And Terminology
The primary hue of the background and some of the typography on the Happy Twitmas website is bright red.

Chapolito in Color Theory For Designers, Part 2: Understanding Concepts And Terminology
Using a lot of pure hues together can add a fun and playful look to a design, as done in the header and elsewhere on this website.

Estilorama in Color Theory For Designers, Part 2: Understanding Concepts And Terminology
Pure red is a very popular hue in Web design.

Mix in Color Theory For Designers, Part 2: Understanding Concepts And Terminology
Mix uses a number of pure hues in its header and logo.

Steveottenad in Color Theory For Designers, Part 2: Understanding Concepts And Terminology
Green in its purer forms is seen less often and so stands out more than some other colors.

    Chroma

Chroma refers to the purity of a color. A hue with high chroma has no black, white or gray in it. Adding white, black or gray reduces its chroma. It’s similar to saturation but not quite the same. Chroma can be thought of as the brightness of a color in comparison to white.

In design, avoid using hues that have a very similar chroma. Opt instead for hues with chromas that are the same or a few steps away from each other.

    Examples

Moviestills in Color Theory For Designers, Part 2: Understanding Concepts And Terminology
Cyan has a high chroma and so really stands out against black and white.

Differences in chroma can make for a visually pleasing gradient.

    Saturation

Saturation refers to how a hue appears under particular lighting conditions. Think of saturation in terms of weak vs. strong or pale vs. pure hues.

In design, colors with similar saturation levels make for more cohesive-looking designs. As with chroma, colors with similar but not identical saturations can have a jarring effect on visitors.

    Examples

Sifrvault in Color Theory For Designers, Part 2: Understanding Concepts And Terminology
The saturation levels of many of the different hues used here are similar, adding a sense of unity to the overall design.

Rainbeaumars in Color Theory For Designers, Part 2: Understanding Concepts And Terminology
Combining colors with similar muted saturation levels creates a soft design, which is emphasized by the watercolor effects.

    Value

Value could also be called “lightness.” It refers to how light or dark a color is. Ligher colors have higher values. For example, orange has a higher value than navy blue or dark purple. Black has the lowest value of any hue, and white the highest.

When applying color values to your designs, favor colors with different values, especially ones with high chroma. High contrast values generally result in more aesthetically pleasing designs.

    Examples

Creativespark in Color Theory For Designers, Part 2: Understanding Concepts And Terminology
The high value of the yellow used here really stands out against the lower-value black and gray.

Oysterdesign in Color Theory For Designers, Part 2: Understanding Concepts And Terminology
This website combines blue hues with two different values. Because the different values have enough contrast, the overall look is visually appealing.

Copimaj in Color Theory For Designers, Part 2: Understanding Concepts And Terminology
Combining colors with similar values makes for an energetic and lively background (which is enhanced by the design itself).

Whoseview in Color Theory For Designers, Part 2: Understanding Concepts And Terminology
The red here has a lower value than the light blue, which itself has a lower value than the white.

The human eye can pick up differences in value even among such similar hues.

    Tones

Tones are created when gray is added to a hue. Tones are generally duller or softer-looking than pure hues.

Tones are sometimes easier to use in designs. Tones with more gray can lend a certain vintage feel to websites. Depending on the hues, they can also add a sophisticated or elegant look.

    Examples

Lakesideheritage in Color Theory For Designers, Part 2: Understanding Concepts And Terminology
Tones can give websites a sophisticated look while adding some vintage and antique flair.

The tones used in the navigation and background design here give this website a vintage, hand-made feel.

Mergeweb in Color Theory For Designers, Part 2: Understanding Concepts And Terminology
A great example of how a pure hue can really stand out against a background of tones.

Metalab in Color Theory For Designers, Part 2: Understanding Concepts And Terminology
Some colors that we might consider gray are actually tones of other colors. In this case, the background is a blue tone but with a lot of gray added.

    Shades

A shade is created when black is added to a hue, making it darker. The word is often incorrectly used to describe tint or tone, but shade only applies to hues made darker by the addition of black.

In design, very dark shades are sometimes used instead of black and can serve as neutrals. Combining shades with tints is best to avoid too dark and heavy a look.

    Examples

Jonathanmoore in Color Theory For Designers, Part 2: Understanding Concepts And Terminology
Jonathan Moore’s website has a variety of different shades of purple in the background (and a couple of tints in other parts).

Combining shades within textures adds interest to this website.

    Tints

A tint is formed when white is added to a hue, lightening it. Very light tints are sometimes called pastels, but any pure hue with white added to it is a tint.

Tints are often used to create feminine or lighter designs. Pastel tints are especially used to make designs more feminine. They also work well in vintage designs and are popular on websites targeted at parents of babies and toddlers.

    Examples

    Conclusion

While you don’t necessarily have to remember all of these technical terms, you should be familiar with the actual concepts, especially if you want to master part 3 of this series (in which we create our own color schemes). To that end, here’s a cheat sheet to jog your memory:

    • Hue is color (blue, green, red, etc.).

    • Chroma is the purity of a color (a high chroma has no added black, white or gray).

    • Saturation refers to how strong or weak a color is (high saturation being strong).

    • Value refers to how light or dark a color is (light having a high value).

    • Tones are created by adding gray to a color, making it duller than the original.

    • Shades are created by adding black to a color, making it darker than the original.

    • Tints are created by adding white to a color, making it lighter than the original.
