How doorways can affect your memory

Walking through doorways causes forgetting, new research shows
We’ve all experienced it: The frustration of entering a room and forgetting what we were going to do. Or get. Or find.

New research from University of Notre Dame Psychology Professor Gabriel Radvansky suggests that passing through doorways is the cause of these memory lapses.

“Entering or exiting through a doorway serves as an ‘event boundary’ in the mind, which separates episodes of activity and files them away,” Radvansky explains.

“Recalling the decision or activity that was made in a different room is difficult because it has been compartmentalized.”

The study was published recently in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology.

Conducting three experiments in both real and virtual environments, Radvansky’s subjects – all college students – performed memory tasks while crossing a room and while exiting a doorway.

In the first experiment, subjects used a virtual environment and moved from one room to another, selecting an object on a table and exchanging it for an object at a different table. They did the same thing while simply moving across a room but not crossing through a doorway.

Radvansky found that the subjects forgot more after walking through a doorway compared to moving the same distance across a room, suggesting that the doorway or “event boundary” impedes one’s ability to retrieve thoughts or decisions made in a different room.

The second experiment in a real-world setting required subjects to conceal in boxes the objects chosen from the table and move either across a room or travel the same distance and walk through a doorway. The results in the real-world environment replicated those in the virtual world: walking through a doorway diminished subjects’ memories.

The final experiment was designed to test whether doorways actually served as event boundaries or if one’s ability to remember is linked to the environment in which a decision – in this case, the selection of an object – was created. Previous research has shown that environmental factors affect memory and that information learned in one environment is retrieved better when the retrieval occurs in the same context. Subjects in this leg of the study passed through several doorways, leading back to the room in which they started. The results showed no improvements in memory, suggesting that the act of passing through a doorway serves as a way the mind files away memories.

Nightmares Like Constructions Failed!

Did you ever dream of something that looks very strange and makes you so much scared and worried that you woke up suddenly. Sometimes the dream might be about you lost somewhere in the middle of the road or street or you are in a house that doesn't have any door or if there is door it cannot be accessed.
These are somehow are real construction fails sometimes. Like the below ones.

Door-to-ceiling

Never seen before is this stunning piece of total lack of reason, with an access door hanging freely from the ceiling of a lecture room. As though it were some floating secret access portal to a parallel universe, where students instantaneously download knowledge, rather being forced to sit and listen to endless hours of lectures.

Gated access

I can see Sheldon standing in front of the gate knocking and shouting in order to get inside, because – of course – the proper way to enter premises is through a gate. There’s no fence you say? But the proper way…!

Stairway to… the ceiling

A bit like a parody-tribute to Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven. The reasoning behind these stairs is as confusing as it is insane: stairs leading all the way up to the soffit. Perhaps it’s some kind of office-related tribute to Harry Potter’s room under the stairs?

The door to nowhere

People, who live in glass houses, shouldn’t throw stones. Particularly if the access door to their house leads to nowhere, just like this one, which feels like a set from some scary movie where the protagonist can see the outside world and lives in a quasi-fish bowl world, which she cannot get out of!

Off the beaten track

You’ve heard about thinking out of the box, coloring out of the lines and taking the road less travelled. Well, now we’ve got another one to add to the list: laying a path outside of the access gate. We bet you’re asking why? Well, sorry but we don’t have that particular answer just yet. Don’t hold your breath!

The curious case of the emergency exit to nowhere

Because when you’re running for an emergency exit, who cares where it leads to, right? That’s why some clever folks have built an emergency exit which ends a few feet shy of the ground. Just think of it… after the ordeal of having to run through a building for your life, you find that the safety of the emergency exit is missing a safety net or a trampoline or someone to make sure you land safely on the ground.

Overground

By definition, the bridge (one of the most solid architectural structures) is meant to provide a passage way over physical obstacles (such as a river, valley, under-road, or even a swimming pool). The architect might have planned to have the bridge going over the pool, however the construction team seems to have thought otherwise, and decided to move the bridge over the ground, just for giggles!

Not tall enough!

We have no idea what lies behind this door. The handle is out of reach and we just couldn’t be bothered to get a ladder and check it out. Since the door is completely pointless, it probably leads nowhere, anyway.

Stairs interrupted

A novel idea, surely. It’s an external fire escape for seasoned circus acrobats. Not only would they have to escape the building which is supposedly engulfed in flames, but they would also have to overcome the obstacles posed by this fine piece of work!

Stairway to

Designed specifically to only get the double zero-sized models to the exclusive top floor, this staircase is the true mark of architectural genius. It’s a cleverly devised trick to make sure that only the slimmest of the slim (and the flattest of the flat) shall pass.

A balcony without a view

This is some construction feat. Imagine going through all the trouble of building a balcony, complete with what looks like wrought iron railings, just to leave out the actual physical and visual access of the balcony.

Accept the Change

Change is good or not good, Accept it quickly. It is good for you.

I don't feel myself as a opposition of accepting the change. but recently I noticed, I am not very good in that also.
Everywhere, everyone is now using smartphone. but I was not until now.
I used to have a simple Nokia phone, it was smart phone but I didn't use its smart features. Because it was a cheap phone and those smart features does not work in that phone as should be.

Well, I had all other smart devices in daily use, like smart TV, iPad, smart watch etc but not the phone which i now feel is the most important thing.
Recently, I noticed a big fall of some great companies just because they did not "Accepted the Change". Those companies were keep on following their own old ideas with this moto:
We are a successful company since N number of years. And we earn this success with our own ideas. Why should we change that now.
They forgot that the change is required nowadays to keep on running.
Now, I tell you why I was not using any smart phone before. Because I like small screen and Nokia phone. Nokia did not launch any successful smart phone with small screen that's why I was not iPhone or any other smart phone. All of them were coming with big screens and I like small ones.
When I noticed that, iPhone 5 screen was smaller than iPhone 6 then I feel Its a Change in peoples choice that's why all the successful smart phones are coming in big screens. So ...
The very next day I had iPhone 6s in my hand.

Well, Change is always good in our lives. It makes us happy. If we accept the change quickly we don't sob for long on the sudden unhappy thing happen with us

Changes can be hard but necessary, and a change of scenery can re-ignite your interest and motivation.

Accept the things you cannot change; have the courage to change the things which you can; and have the wisdom to know the difference. Changes can be hard but necessary, and a change of scenery can re-ignite your interest and motivation.
Understand that people change and sometimes they are not compatible with our lives. We just have to learn to Accept the Change and move on.
The biggest setbacks I commonly see are when people are starring in the face of change. Whether it’s unexpected or they just run out of options, when you force change on someone their whole turns upside down.
The biggest fear of change is usually not knowing what will happen next. Unsettling routines, changing locations and making someone expand beyond their known world spells disaster for many.
If we’re honest with ourselves, we know that making the change will be the best for us moving forward. The simple key is silencing the “what ifs” and making it happen.
The are no quick tips or twelve steps. Say, yes! Then quickly put action to what you’ve been avoiding.
Why fight it? It’s time to make life happen!

Best Invention Of Life

“Death Is Very Likely The Single Best Invention Of Life. It Is Life’s Change Agent.”

By: Steven Paul Jobs

When I die, do not be saddened for too great a length. Do not stop working. Do not stop, period. Keep moving forward. Know that life goes on; it’s both long and short, and we must capture as much of it as possible.

Death Is Very Likely The Single Best Invention Of Life. It Is Life’s Change Agent.

Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent.

It’s Life’s way of telling us that we need to work, and fast. And that nothing lasts.

When I die, live. If you haven’t thus far, start immediately. Live! Truly live. Aim to be greater than that which came before.

The Power of Words

Did you ever reflect on the power of words? Words can cause us to erupt into laughter, break down into tears, fly into a rage, sink into despair, or float on clouds of happiness. Pretty strong stuff, wouldn’t you say? Yet, that’s only the beginning, for the words we use do more than describe the events we experience and actions we take; they determine their outcomes. What I am today is the result of the words I have used. What I will become and experience tomorrow, depends on the words I use today.

My thoughts have no substance until they are shaped into words. Once they become words they can be strung together to make statements. And the statements I make create my reality. If I make angry statements, I AM angry. If I make joyful statements, I AM joyful. When I state my job is miserable, I AM miserable. When I state my job is interesting, I AM interested.

In the beginning was the Word

Believe in yourself
To the depth of your being.
Nourish the talents
Your spirit is freeing.
Know in your heart
when the going gets slow
that your faith in yourself
will continue to grow.
Don't forfeit ambition
when others may doubt.
It's your life to live;
you must live it throughout.
Learn from your errors;
don't dwell in the past.
Never withdraw
from a world that is vast.
Believe in yourself;
find the best that is you.
Let your spirit prevail;
steer a course that is true.

The words we use can block our progress or clear the path to success and happiness. They can deprive us of personal power or release it. Words are potent. They are infused with a divine spark. They are a gift from God — tools, which are used to create our reality. Their significance is hinted at in verse one, chapter one, in the Gospel of John: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

Let’s move away from the theoretical and become more practical. The important point is that words are powerful and because we use them, we are powerful. But unless we are aware of their power and their proper use, the power may mistakenly be used destructively.

On November 17, 1847, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote the following: "Words — so innocent and powerless as they are, as standing in a dictionary, how potent for good and evil they become, in the hands of one who knows how to combine them!" So, let’s look at ways of combining words that will release our personal power, not block it, and ways that will prove to be constructive, not destruction.

Tom will be our first example. He lacks the power of his friends who are comfortable working with computers. When asked about it, he replies, "I'd like to learn how to use computers, but I have no time." His combination of words, his statement, is filled with denial, negation, powerlessness, weakness, excuse, blame, and fear. Would you say his statement releases personal power or blocks it?

Let’s help Tom. We’ll begin by changing just one word in his reply. By changing BUT to AND, his reply now becomes, "I'd like to learn how to use computers, AND I have no time." Look at what’s happened. Instead of one negative statement, we now have two separate statements. The first statement, "I'd like to learn how to use computers," points to a desire to increase one’s personal power, so that’s good.

The second statement is an exaggeration and needs to be changed to a truthful one before we can continue. So, "I have NO time" becomes "I have LITTLE time." This is actually a positive statement. After all, if I have LITTLE time, I have SOME time. I can now accomplish my wish to learn about computers by spending a LITTLE time studying and practicing each day.

Do you feel any guilt, shame, or regret because you’re not doing some things that you wish you were? Good! Those feelings are your friends. They are your inner urges to become more powerful. Use those urges as inspiration to combine your words into empowering statements. Change BUT into AND, and add SO at the end of the statement. For example, change "I want to quit smoking, BUT I’m addicted" to "I want to quit smoking AND I’m addicted, SO (I will kick the habit by doing the following . . .).

If you find yourself often using BUT as an excuse, you can keep it in your statement if it makes it easier for you. But reverse the order of your statement and add SO. Here’s what I mean. Instead of saying, "I’d like to quit smoking, but I’m addicted" change it to "I’m addicted to cigarettes, but I’d like to quit, so . . . (I’m going to do the following).

Here’s another hint. Always replace SHOULD with COULD. Why? SHOULD conjures up feelings of stress, pressure, anxiety, and resentment. I feel like it’s something I don’t want to do. For instance, I SHOULD clean the house. Ugh! But when I use COULD it points to choice, which is the source of personal power. It also invites reflection on what would happen if I were to do what I COULD. Let’s see, now, I COULD clean the house, and if I were to do so, I would feel a lot better. Well, let’s get started!

Also, change HAVE TO to WANT TO … BECAUSE. In other words, "I HAVE TO clean the house" becomes "I WANT TO clean the house BECAUSE . . ." The WANT TO empowers you, and the reasons generated by BECAUSE motivate you to act. Similarly, change MUST to CHOOSE TO . . . BECAUSE. So, "I MUST clean the house" now becomes "I CHOOSE TO clean the house BECAUSE . . ."

Can you see how the words you use shape you and create your environment? Can you feel the enormous power locked into words? Don’t take your words lightly. Become aware of them and use them to empower you. Don’t allow a poor choice of words strip you of your unlimited potential. To help you move in that direction, here’s another tip. Replace WISH, LIKE TO, or TRY with WILL. So, "I WISH I could quit smoking," or "I’d LIKE TO quit smoking," or "I’m going to TRY to quit smoking" becomes "I WILL quit smoking!" WILL releases commitment and allows you to work on a plan to reach your goal.

Finally, replace SOMEDAY, SOON, or EVENTUALLY with a specific date. "SOMEDAY I’ll start an exercise program" or "I plan to start exercising SOON" or, worse yet, "EVENTUALLY I’m going to join a fitness club" are statements that block my power. On the other hand, "I’m going to check out two fitness clubs and join one of them THIS WEEKEND" empowers me today and will create a much better future. Can you become aware of the words you use, change them, and develop your personal power? Of course you can! Just believe in yourself.

At the end of Friendship Day, I want to share a nice quotations by Anais Nin

Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born.

DEPRESSED

DEPRESSED

You prepare yourself mentally for a new day, but await a new start. You look in the mirror every day and question the person standing on the other side. You fake a smile for all to see, when really you are screaming inside. You cry when no one can see or hear you. Sometimes when someone says something that triggers a memory, you burt into tears. You just want to escape from this world of misery, your personal hell. You always get hurt no matter what, and you think you can take anymore bull shit.

The Must-Follow Money Rules for Couples

Keep your finances—and your relationship—happy with these quick and simple guidelines from iVillage personal finance expert Carmen Wong Ulrich

When it comes to how to handle money as a couple, advice runs the gamut from one extreme to the other. Talk to lawyers (especially divorce lawyers) and they’ll probably tell you to keep all of your money separate. Talk to your local priest or minister and he or she may say you must share everything with your spouse.

There are some edicts, however, that always ring true. The rules below will help you not only have a better financial life together, but may actually help you do more lovin’ together.

It’s not so much how you divvy your money up, but that you both agree on a method and stay informed.

Some women marry later in life and, as they’ve been paying their own way and saving and investing for 15-plus years, are happy to keep their finances completely separate. Some other perfectly happy gals walked the aisle in their 20s and immediately blended their finances with their husbands. And then there’s me. My husband and I put money into a joint household account to take care of household bills and goals, but also keep our own personal accounts—the same when it comes to credit.

Here’s what matters: does it work for you both? If it does, you’re probably OK. But, if you don’t like your financial arrangement with your spouse or partner, have that discussion and change it up.

However, if you’re OK with things because you prefer not to know a thing, it’s time for your wake-up call. I had a male guest on my show once, a certified financial planner, who told me that his wife knows nothing about their finances—nothing! My response, “WHAT?! How could you?!” (I liked the guy, but he went down several notches in my book after this revelation.) He said that she was fine with it. She didn’t want to know. This is the only arrangement that should set off alarm bells. Even if you’re a stay-at-home mom, you must know at least the basics of where the money is, how much there is, and where it’s going.

Why? Because you cannot afford to not stay informed, no matter your financial arrangement. We live longer, are more likely to have to care for children and aging parents and we’re more likely to have less money in retirement. The odds are stacked against us. Find an arrangement that makes you both secure and informed, and you’ll be happier.

Someone has to be in charge

Every household needs a Chief Financial Officer. And no, it shouldn’t automatically be the guy. Which one of you is better with money? Which of you always pays bills on time and has a great credit score? Managing the money can feel like a chore if you’re always saddled with doing all the work, but there needs to be someone who takes the initiative to keep track of everything—not just bill-paying, but your goals as a couple too.

Quelle surprise, I’m the head of the money-household at home—I make sure bills are paid, savings are made and I monitor our investments as well. And the majority of you say that you do the same. Pew Research found that women tend to rule the roost when it comes to making financial decisions. In almost half of all households women say that they are in charge of money matters while only 23% say their husbands are and 29% say it’s a joint operation.

But, that doesn’t mean that what I say goes, no matter what. Family CFO’s are not tyrants. As household CFO your job is to keep the team informed as well as to be open to changes and disagreements along the way. I make sure to communicate almost daily with my husband about financial obligations as well as upcoming big bills or purchases, and most fun of all, how we can reach goals together.

Stay informed. Feel secure. Two things that are sure to net you fewer scuffles and more snuggles!

Story of Appreciation

One young academically excellent person went to apply for a managerial position in a big company.

He passed the first interview; the director did the last interview, made the last decision.

The director discovered from the CV, that the youth's academic result was excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research, never was there a year he did not score.

The director asked, "Did you obtain any scholarship in school?" and the youth answered "no".

The director asked, "Did your father pay your school fees?" The youth answered, "my father passed away when I was one year old and it was my mother who paid my school fees".

The director asked, "Where did your mother work?" the youth answered, "my mother worked as cloth cleaner." The director requested the youth to show his hands and the youth showed a pair of hands that was smooth and perfect to the director.

The director asked, "Did you ever help your mother wash clothes before?" The youth answered," never, my mother always wanted me to study and read more books, furthermore, my mother could wash clothes faster than I could"

The director said, I have a request, when you go back today, go and help to clean your mother's hand, and then see me tomorrow morning .

The youth felt that the chance of landing the job was high and when he went back, he happily wanted to clean his mother's hands. His mother felt strange. With happiness mixed with fear, she showed her hands to the kid.

The youth cleaned his mother's hands slowly and his tears fell as he did that. It was the first time he noticed that his mother's hands were so wrinkled, and that there were so many bruises in her hands. Some bruises were so painful that she shuddered when his mother’s hands were cleaned with water .

This is the first time that the youth realized and experienced that it is this pair of hands that washed the clothes everyday to earn him the school fees and that the bruises in the mother's hand were the price that the mother paid for his graduation and academic excellence and probably his future.

After finishing the cleaning of his mother's hands, the youth quietly washed all the remaining clothes for his mother.

That night, the mother and son talked for a very long time.

Next morning , the youth went to the director's office

The director noticed the tear in the youth's eye and asked: "Can you tell what you did and learnt yesterday in your house?"

The youth answered, " I cleaned my mother's hands and also finished washing all the remaining clothes'

The director asked , " please tell me what you felt "

The youth said, "Number 1, I know what appreciation is now'. Without my mother, I would not be successful today. Number 2, Now I know how to work together with my mother. Only now do I realize how difficult and tough it is to get something done. Number 3, I know the importance and value of family relationship.

The director said, "This is what I am asking, I want to recruit a person that can appreciate the help of others, a person who knows the suffering of others to get things done, and a person that would not put money as his only goal in life to be my manager. You are hired.

Later on, this young person worked very hard, and received the respect of his subordinates, every employee worked diligently and as a team and the company improved tremendously.

A child, who has been protected and habitually given whatever he needs, develops "entitlement mentality" and always puts himself first. He is ignorant of his parent's efforts. When he starts work, he assumes every person must listen to him, and when he becomes a manager, he would never know the suffering of his employees and always blame others. These kinds of people, can achieve good results and may be successful for a while, but eventually would not feel a sense of achievement or satisfaction. If we happen to be this kind of (protective) parent, this is the time to ask the question- whether we did/do love our kids or destroy them.

You can let your kid live in a big house, eat a good meal, learn to play the piano, watch a big screen TV but when you are cutting grass, please let them experience it. After a meal, let them wash their plate and bowl together with their brothers and sisters. It is not because you do not have money to hire a maid, but it is because you want to love and show them the correct way. You want them to understand that no matter how rich their parents are, one day they will grow old, become weak and that their hair too will grow gray,. The most important thing is for your kid to learn how to appreciate experience and learn the effort and ability needed to work with others to get things done. They should also value, appreciate what the parents have done and love them for who they are!

Divine accident

"The most wonderful of all things in life, I believe, is the discovery of another human being with whom one's relationship has a glowing depth, beauty, and joy as the years increase. This inner progressiveness of love between two human beings is a most marvelous thing, it cannot be found by looking for it or by passionately wishing for it. It is a sort of Divine accident." Sir Hugh Walpoe

"Today I begin to understand what love must be, if it exists. . . . When we are parted, we each feel the lack of the other half of ourselves. We are incomplete like a book in two volumes of which the first has been lost. That is what I imagine love to be: incompleteness in absence". Edmond de Goncourt (1822-96) and Jules de Goncourt (1830-70), French writers.

My heart to you is given: Oh, do give yours to me; We'll lock them up together, And throw away the key.

"Love is an act of endless forgiveness, a tender look which becomes a habit".

life

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our Attitudes.
